Day 3 – 12 Days of Unscripted with SST
Cybersecurity 101
For Day 3, we revisited Episode Three of Unscripted with SST, where we examined the fundamentals of cybersecurity and why every business regardless of size needs a solid strategy. Our guests shared what cybersecurity really means today: not just firewalls and antivirus, but a layered, proactive approach that safeguards a company’s operations, reputation, and financial future. We looked into the most often overlooked areas in SMB security, including employee training, endpoint protection, and unmanaged third-party access, all of which remain key attack vectors in today’s threat landscape.
The episode also showed how frameworks like CIS Controls provide businesses with a clear, prioritized plan to strengthen their defenses. Even just implementing the IG1 controls can give an organization an edge over most SMBs. Regarding Incident Response, our guests were direct: the worst time to develop a plan is during a crisis. Real-world examples emphasized this, including the story of a business hit with ransomware that lost a full week of productivity and spent months recovering despite having some tools in place. Without a managed SOC, visibility, and isolation capabilities, the attackers moved silently until it was too late.
With numerous statistics showing the risk SMBs face, Episode Three made one thing clear: cybersecurity is no longer optional. It’s a necessity for survival. The good news? Businesses don’t have to face this alone. Outsourcing to an MSP, adopting a framework, and fostering a security-minded culture can significantly reduce risk. Cybersecurity isn’t just about protection; it’s about preparation, and this episode offered the essential first steps for any organization ready to take it seriously.
